Although there are several books about individual Catholic women religious (nuns and sisters) artists, there are no published resources on them as a group. Communal living and the vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience set them apart from other artists – although religious themes are common in their work, they’ve also created traditional portraits, still lifes, and landscapes. Additionally, those in the USA in the 20th-21st centuries are unique as both creators and recipients of the changes in the country and the Roman Catholic Church.
The Women Religious Artists Project collects stories and artwork of these women religious artists to highlight connections between them and to keep them alive as these communities decline.
